Leaders have great needs and encounter a lot of problems such that they are often in need of help—both from inside and outside of their organization.
As a startup founder, you can bootstrap at the beginning but that only takes the business so far and won’t take you forward as quickly as you need to. In his book, All You Have to Do Is Ask: How to Master the Most Important Skill for Success, WAYNE BAKER talks about figuring out how to ask for help in a way that your message will be positively received. This is an important topic because by design most entrepreneurs are self-starters, do--it--yourself people, independent hard workers who thrive on self-reliance.
As leaders, we are always asking for help albeit in indirect ways. Some of us are shy or feel uncomfortable asking for help fearing that we will be regarded as incompetent or weak or ignorant or that we can’t do our work. Research shows that as long as you make a thoughtful, intelligent request, people will think you are more competent, not less. In today’s fast-paced business world we need to do tasks more effectively, more efficiently, and quicker and the ability to reach out for help or input or resources is crucial. Leaders should be generous and help others too. You are the role model for the kind of behavior that you want in other people.
You can learn more about giving and receiving and building a culture where people are encouraged to ask for help and support each other here.
