Warren Buffet once said: “in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if you don't have the first, the other two will kill you.”
At the Economist Impact event on “Commercialising Quantum” (17th May, 2022) speaker after speaker spoke about the ‘talent shortage’ facing the quantum industry. This is not a surprise to me – finding the right people has always been tough. I’m writing from the benefit of 3 different perspectives: twenty years in technology startups and consulting (with hiring and team management responsibilities), five years developing the UK quantum computing ecosystem, and building quantum tech communities across the world.
This is an issue that is not going to go away, but how do you create a sustainable talent pipeline where the talent is global and facing unequal barriers?
At OneQuantum, we’ve thought about this and our approach is multi-pronged: building connected communities, running professional mentoring programmes, facilitating career services, and developing direct experience through hands-on projects. But that’s only part of the story!
We play an important role in the ecosystem talking to educators, policymakers, legislators, regulators, investors, trade bodies, companies and so on to create the ‘connective tissue’ to grow the talent pool in an intelligent way, and one that will serve the future.
Every day I see talented people across our global network, each with their own local challenges (such as access to education, skills or resources), and we support them to find a way forward, take a positive step, and then another and another! Their determination inspires us!
When I hear the words ‘talent shortage’, I just want to prod the quantum industry and say “hey, look over here to see what we’re doing – we may be the solution you’re looking for!”
